Why not volunteer?
25 Aug 2008
According to the recent Scottish Household Survey, 33% of those in full time employment and 35% of those in part time employment engage in volunteering in the community. Perhaps more surprisingly 37% of self employed persons also volunteer.
Volunteering for those in work might be seen as using their skills or acquiring new skills to help out in their community. Tasks can include befriending, advocacy work, helplines, escorting, transporting, reception, environmental projects, literacy/numeracy tutor, fundraising, committee work, sports and recreation. With the great success of British competitors in the Olympics, we shall have to turn our attention increasingly to the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow 2014 for which up to 15,000 volunteers will be needed. That suggests we need to build up our culture of volunteering in the city and the business community will play a crucial role there.
Employers in the Glasgow Area are therefore invited to consider encouraging their staff to volunteer. The Volunteer Centre Glasgow will be delighted to discuss this further and arrange suitable placements. Alternatively, individuals can volunteer online through our website www.volunteerglasgow.org and pick the most appropriate opportunity themselves.
We are grateful to SBC for providing us with the opportunity to publicise volunteering in Glasgow. Further enquiries can be made to myself
