Introduction - Across Scotland

The SBC network comprises groups of companies working together in partnership with the relevant agencies to apply business expertise, knowledge and resources to meet the needs of local communities throughout Scotland.

The networks mission is to co-ordinate and channel business resources to deliver positive benefit to Scotland's communities by:

  • Applying business skills and resources to help areas most in need
  • Working together through a shared framework
  • Simplifying, facilitating and supporting involvement
  • Addressing local needs
  • Spreading the word and encouraging others by example

Our Nationwide Objectives
  • To increase the level of practical business involvement across the country in the fields of education, employability and community
  • To increase membership

  • To enhance the our impacts through better collaboration, learning and sharing of knowledge
  • To develop effective measures of impact to track the benefits from businesses' involvement
  • To promote and encourage corporate responsibility by demonstrating to companies how they can benefit from engagement with SBC, and to communicate with wider stakeholders the value of that engagement and the role of SBC as a whole.
Role of our local groups

The groups act as brokers, co-ordinating and channelling assistance from the business community in order to address the social and economic needs of disadvantaged communities. They bring the resources, energy, ideas and expertise of businesses and business people, to help tackle social needs and promote area regeneration in areas across Scotland.

Groups are made up of representatives of national and local companies who work in partnership with local agencies and projects. They focus on three broad areas: education and training; employment, and general community issues, such as environment, health and drugs abuse.

Over 400 companies are currently part of our network. The level of commitment reflects the extent to which they feel able to get involved.

  • Supply of redundant/surplus material, products and services
  • Voluntary involvement of staff with education, enterprise and community projects
  • Provision of work-experience placements and other experience opportunities
  • Input of professional/technical/managerial expertise to community projects
  • Fund-raising activities within companies to support community projects
